News and Events

During the past summer, we returned to Galicia, to the Tarnopol region. The 8th annual delegation of the JGB Organization began the work of documenting the ancient Jewish cemetery in Buczacz, S.Y. Agnon’s home town. This cemetery holds a special place in those of Agnon’s works devoted to his home town. It symbolizes the continuity of generations in the city and is an important component in the special Jewish space in which the plots of his many stories take place.

At the 17th World Congress of Jewish Studies that took place in Jerusalem in August this year our organization’s activities were presented in two special sessions:

New project recently completed by the JGB Organization presents to the public a unique archival material concerning the Stanisławów Jewry before the World War II.

Meorei Galicia: Encyclopaedia of Galician Sages by rabbi Meir Wunder is one of the most extensive and reliable sources of rabbinical genealogy written in the twentieth century.

As a result of the documentation work that was performed in 2015 by the delegation in the cemetery in Kuty, the tombstone of Rabbi Yosef Epstein, the rabbi of Kuty (Kutov) in the years 1810-1828, was uncovered, together with that of his wife, Gittel the daughter of R. Nahman Zvi Ha-Levi.

The organization’s seventh annual delegation moved beyond the borders of Galicia. This time, our goal was to document one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Bukovina – a cemetery located in the village of Chernohuozyi next to Vizhnitz.
